ALNAP Innovations Initiative

Innovations in International Humanitarian Action (8th Review of Humanitarian Action, July 2009)

ALNAP's 2009 meeting was held on 17 and 18 November 2009 in Central London, hosted in partnership with the Humanitarian Futures Programme, Kings College, London.

Day One

The theme of the Meeting Day One was Innovations in International Humanitarian Action, building on a study published in the 8th Review of Humanitarian Action. 

Eleanor Monbiot of World VIsion International, opened the meeting. Minouche Shafik, Permanent Secretary of DFID, gave the opening address, which included the announcement of a £3 million investment in humanitarian innovations. 

The two keynote addresses were presented by John Mitchell, ALNAP Director and by Lynda Gratton, Professor of Management Practice at London Business School, nominated by The Times of London in 2007 as one of the 20 most important and influential business thinkers in the world. The meeting went on to consider a number of key questions related to Innovation in Humanitarian Response led by a panel of expert discussants including Peter Walker of Tufts University; Mark Cutts, Senior Adviser to OCHA; Jacqui Tong President of MSF UK; Valerie Bemo, Gates Foundation and Cliff Dennett, a corporate innovation consultant.

Innovations Fair

At the end of Day 1 discussions, meeting participants had the opportunity to learn about humanitarian innovations from those who have developed them in real-world settings. A range of specific innovations were showcased, drawing on efforts across the ALNAP membership and beyond. Click here to find out more about the Fair and the twenty-three innovations that were highlighted.

Day Two

Day Two of the ALNAP Meeting for Full Member Organisations and invited guests saw the first public presentation of the findings of the ALNAP State of the System review. This was followed by a number of presentations from across the ALNAP membership on key ongoing and new initiatives on performance, learning and accountability, including the following:
