Previous initiatives

ALNAP's Global Participation Study is the largest cross-operational study of beneficiary participation ever undertaken. Its outputs include a pilot handbook and six country case studies.

Previous ALNAP initiatives range from trialling new approaches and tools to commissioning studies on topics relevant to ALNAP’s mandate. ALNAP has also developed guidance material for operational staff.

  • In 2003, ALNAP members trialled the concept of a Learning Support Office during the Southern Africa Food Crisis.
  • ALNAP members collaborated on a comprehensive study on participation and consultation of affected populations in humanitarian action between 2002 and 2005.
  • ALNAP has undertaken R&D work on the topic of protection. Following draft publication and piloting, a final version of the ALNAP guide on protection was launched in 2005. This has quickly become recognised as a valuable contribution to humanitarian guidance on this topic.
  • Most recently, ALNAP hosted and coordinated the Tsunami Evaluation Coalition (TEC), a cross-sector initiative to assess the performance of the tsunami response through five themed evaluations. The TEC was commended by former US President, William J Clinton.
