Evaluating humanitarian action

ALNAP first developed training modules in 2001 as a way of sharing knowledge and good practice identified through its research activities. The modules were updated in 2003.

The material has been further updated in collaboration with Channel Research for a course organised by Channel Research in January 2007.

The material is available to all free of charge, to aid those providing courses on the evaluation of humanitarian action. The materials are not a definitive set of ideas: you may want to add further training materials or activities, and introduce your own organisation's policies, procedures and models.

It may be possible for the ALNAP secretariat to put you in touch with a facilitator to teach your course. All contractual arrangements between your organisation and the facilitator are your own responsibility.

ALNAP would appreciate any feedback on the content and usability of these materials - alnap@alnap.org

List of materials

Course manual: this contains: a suggested outline programme; summaries of the teaching; background reference documents; definitions of terms; illustrations; checklists and tables; individual and group exercises; extensive references to sources of further information; and a specimen course evaluation form. The manual should be adapted to the course provider’s local needs and sent to the participants in advance of the course.

Session summaries: these include session objectives, key messages, and suggested timings for the components of each session to assist the course facilitator in planning, and where appropriate answers to exercises proposed in the manual.

PowerPoint slides cover the main points of each session.
