About the Course:

Set amidst the context of global climate change and population growth, the number of natural and human-made emergencies every year has increased drastically in the past decade. Although floods, earthquakes, droughts, and other natural hazards cannot be prevented, their impact on communities can be limited through disaster risk reduction (DRR) practices.

You will learn the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through systematically analyzing and managing the causal factors of disasters. For example, the course examines reducing exposure to hazards, lessening vulnerability of people and property, wisely managing land and the environment, or improving preparedness for adverse events.

Blending theory with practice, this workshop takes you through good practices in the stages of the disaster risk management cycle and the commonly used terminology, frameworks, tools and approaches to effective DRR.

The curriculum also covers a selection of global DRR documents and frameworks, including the United Nations-endorsed Hyogo Framework for Action and the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) system.

Who should attend?

The course is designed to benefit field practitioner staff of INGOs, NGOs, CBOs and goverment department staff responsible for disaster risk reduction.

Leadership In Development and Emergency Practice: New Short Courses for Senior Executives and Future Leaders

Building a Better Response training: Haiti

The Building a Better Response (BBR) project has launched a series of face-to-face workshops to strengthen NGO capacity on the international humanitarian architecture. These 2-day workshops will offer NGO staff the opportunity to increase their knowledge on key aspects of the humanitarian architecture: the cluster system, humanitarian country leadership, and humanitarian funding mechanisms.

The latest addition to the training schedule is a workshop to take place in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, June 13-14, 2013. The workshop will be presented in English, with simultaneous translation into French, as needed.

The "Building a Better Response: Strengthening Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Capacity and Engagement in the International Humanitarian Architecture" project aims to strengthen the capacity of national and international NGO personnel to engage with the humanitarian systems and architecture in a manner that improves overall coordination and response to the needs of affected populations. The BBR project is funded by USAID's Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and is being implemented by a consortium of International Medical Corps, Concern Worldwide, and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.

Construire une Meilleure Réponse: Annonce d'atelier de formation pour renforcer la capacité et l'engagement des ONG dans le système humanitaire international

Le projet «Construire une Meilleure Réponse» a lancé une série d'ateliers sur le système humanitaire international pour renforcer la capacité des ONG à participer dans ce système. Ces ateliers ont une durée de 2 jours chacun, et ont pour but d'augmenter la connaissance des éléments clés du système humanitaire parmi le personnel des ONG - cela inclut le système de cluster (groupes sectoriels), les équipes humanitaires et les mécanismes de financements humanitaires.

Nous avons le plaisir de vous informer que le prochain atelier se tiendra à Port-au-Prince, le 13& 14 juin 2013. L'atelier de formation se déroulera en anglais avec traduction simultanée en français.

Le droit international humanitaire de la théorie à la pratique : principes, normes et action humanitaire

DESCRIPTION DU COURS

Ce cours est ouvert aux professionnels de l'humanitaire désireux d'acquérir une formation juridique pragmatique (représentants d'organisations non gouvernementales, d'organisations internationales, d'agences gouvernementales et de bailleurs de fonds humanitaires).

Il fait partie intégrante de la stratégie globale du CICR et du Mouvement international de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge en matière de promotion des règles et principes du DIH. Organisé sous forme de sessions thématiques alliant théorie et pratique, ce cours doit amener les participants à mieux comprendre les problématiques complexes et les défis du DIH et de l'action humanitaire dans les conflits armés contemporains.

Les précédentes éditions ont compté de nombreux intervenants renommés dans le domaine du droit et de l'action humanitaires, provenant d'organisations internationales, de tribunaux internationaux, du monde militaire, du CICR et d'autres composantes du Mouvement.

MÉTHODOLOGIE

Les participants sélectionnés suivront au préalable un cours d'introduction au DIH en ligne qui leur permettra d'acquérir des notions de base communes et ainsi, d'approfondir les échanges lors du cours présentiel.

Les connaissances acquises durant les sessions thématiques seront mises en pratique et analysées afin d'apporter des solutions concrètes aux problématiques qui se posent dans les conflits contemporains.

EDITION 2013

Organisée conjointement par le CICR et la Croix-Rouge française, cette première édition réservée aux professionnels de l'humanitaire, se déroulera à Lyon, du 28 juillet au 3 août 2013. Les sujets abordés seront les suivants :

Le prix du cours est de 500 euros. Ce montant inclut le matériel didactique, l'hébergement et les repas. En revanche, les participants organiseront eux-mêmes leur voyage.

Modalités d'inscription

Les candidat(e)s intéressé(e)s sont prié(e)s d'envoyer une lettre de motivation et un curriculum vitae, ainsi qu'un formulaire d'inscription dûment rempli à la Société nationale de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge de leur pays, si celle-ci apparaît dans la liste suivante. Les candidat(e)s dont la Société nationale ne figure pas dans la liste sont invité(e)s à faire acte de candidature par courriel, jusqu'au 31 mai 2013 au plus tard. Les résultats du processus de sélection seront communiqués aux candidat(e)s aux alentours du 15 juin 2013.

Billions of dollars are invested annually in humanitarian programs around the globe, and robust measurements of their impact are critical. Programs must be demonstrably and objectively effective and accountable to donors, aid agencies and target populations. The Humanitarian Action Evaluation and Implementation Science Summer Workshop is an intensive, hands-on opportunity for humanitarian professionals to develop a vital skill set in the development, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of humanitarian programs. This workshop consists of two consecutive courses (taken independently or together) for those interested in mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative), and information and communication technology (digital methods) used in the implementation of program monitoring and evaluation.

The workshop is taught through the Humanitarian Academy at Harvard, which was formally launched at Harvard University in 2012 to drive positive change in the humanitarian sector through rigorous education and training in the theory and practice of effective humanitarian action.

Urban Humanitarian Emergencies Course

Humanitarian organizations, international agencies and governments that serve populations affected by crises find themselves increasingly in urban settings. Agencies face new challenges, and some potential advantages, in these complex urban environments and are only just learning how to approach them. These new challenges take many forms: complicated physical layouts, poorly prepared institutions and infrastructure, a mixed target population of refugees and underserved locals.Furthermore, coordination of NGOs, communities as well as local authorities calls for urgent education and training in urban crises.

The Urban Humanitarian Emergencies Course is a three-day training organized by the Academy's Lavine Family Humanitarian Studies Initiative to train humanitarian professionals on the current issues and practices involved in this unique and expanding area of research and practice. The course faculty is experienced in humanitarian training and has on-the-ground experience with humanitarian crises in urban areas.

Inscrivez-vous dès maintenant à la formation "Intégrer l'environnement dans l'action humanitaire" qui se déroulera le 13 et 14 juin 2013 à la Cité de la Solidarité, Annemasse, France.

Cette session s'inscrit dans la continuité d'une série de formations montées et animées depuis trois ans sur ce sujet par le Groupe URD en partenariat avec l'UNEP et le Joint Unit d'OCHA. Elle vise à apporter aux professionnels humanitaires, les éléments de compréhension nécessaire à l'intégration de l'approche environnementale tout au long des programmes. Au-delà d'une simple prise de conscience, les acteurs doivent avoir la capacité d'analyser ces enjeux transverses, et de les intégrer telle une composante de leur démarche qualité. Et ce d'autant que de plus en plus de bailleurs tendent à exiger des gages de la prise en compte d'analyse environnementale dans la gestion de programme.

En effet, les désastres ou les conflits peuvent engendrer des impacts environnementaux directs ou indirects, dégradant les ressources naturelles nécessaires à la vie des populations, et aggravant leur vulnérabilité face aux crises. De même, les opérations humanitaires peuvent créer des dégâts environnementaux, alimentant conflits et désastres et fragilisant les capacités de résilience des populations affectées. La compréhension de ces phénomènes, combinée à des appuis méthodologique et techniques constituent les éléments clés de cette formation. Celle-ci n'a pas son équivalent en France tandis que le sujet est d'importance.

Training in Evaluation of Humanitarian Action

This is the 8th year that we are offering this international basic-intermediate level training course, based on the new ALNAP Guide on 'Evaluating Humanitarian Action'. The course will be run by the co-authors of the ALNAP Guide, Margie Buchanan-Smith and John Cosgrave, enabling course participants to learn from the leading evaluators in this field.

About the course
This course has the overall aim of making evaluations of humanitarian action more effective in contributing to the improved performance of interventions and to improve the quality of the evaluation process.
The course will be held at our training venue 'Orshof' near Brussels (www.orshof.be).
Designed for
This course is open to evaluators, managers and users of evaluations. Previous evaluation experience is not necessary, but some knowledge and experience of humanitarian action is required.
There will be many opportunities for learning and exchange between participants who are invited to bring examples of evaluations that they may be designing, carrying out and/ or managing in the future, to work through as case studies.
The learning objectives of the course are to achieve:
-Greater clarity of the purpose and objectives of EHA, and of the principal challenges of doing EHA.
-Better understanding of evaluation criteria and of the most relevant frameworks against which humanitarian assistance should be evaluated.
-A practical approach to planning, designing, implementing and following through on evaluations of humanitarian assistance.
