ALNAP Concludes 27th Annual Meeting on Humanitarian Action in Urban Areas

Posted on 12 January 2012

The 27th ALNAP Annual Meeting took place between 17 and 19 January 2012 (with an additional session on 16 January for a meeting of representatives from National Disaster Management Agencies). The meeting - hosted by World Vision India in Chennai – brought together ALNAP members to share their expertise and gain fresh perspectives on one of the most significant challenges to effective humanitarian action in the 21st Century: the growth and increasing vulnerability of urban populations.

Particpants considered the substantive differences associated with responding in urban rather than rural settings, and ways of addressing both emergency and developmental concerns in a coordinated and coherent manner. Key areas emerging included the importance of more sophisticated relationships between civil society and national governments, and approaches to evaluation and accountability in urban response. There was general consenus that the dialogue should be continued beyond the meeting.
