Solidarités International is working since 2013 in the Batha region in the Sahelian strip in Chad to improve the preparedness for and prevention of drought risks in the agricultural and pastoral communities around Lake Fitri. This project, funded by EuropeAid, aims at strengthening the population's capacities for resilience; one of the activities to reach this goal is the implementation of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA), based on the existing tontine model.

This case study was carried out to determine the socio-economic profile of VSLA members and if this activity incorporates the poorest households, if participating in a VSLA improves the resilience of member households to climate hazards, and what the success factors of a VSLA are.
