The humanitarian crisis in Somalia has continued to deteriorate. Five consecutive failed rainy seasons produced the worst drought in 40 years (UNICEF, 2022).
By mid 2023, more than 8 million people were projected to be food insecure with 727,000 facing catastrophic hunger levels (OCHA, 2022-23).
Drought has led to disease. Conflict and insecurity continue to intensify vulnerabilities and exacerbate displacement.
The global humanitarian system still has the opportunity to avert a wider catastrophe in Somalia but only with adequate funding to heed previous lessons and avoid repeating previous mistakes.
