Help shape the 2021 ALNAP Meeting on learning from disruption

07 Jul 2021

We are excited to share a concept note for our 2021 ALNAP Meeting ‘Learning from disruption: evolution, revolution or status quo?’ taking place between 19 and 21 October. Our open call for sessions is now closed.

Why 'learning from disruption'?

Over the past 17 months the humanitarian system has been affected by external forces which have brought about unplanned and unanticipated disruptions to humanitarian action. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way operations are carried out and the proliferation of virtual meeting platforms has given exposure to a greater range of voices, many of whom are challenging traditional notions of humanitarianism and how its principles and purpose relate to social justice.

This year’s ALNAP Meeting will provide a unique space for the sector to come together to identify the kinds of disruptions that are taking place; where and why they are happening; and what we can learn from them. Our aim is to understand the new trajectories of humanitarian action and be in a better position to manage these changes and disruptions to bring about more effective responses for crisis-affected people.

The meeting will address four key areas in which changes and disruptions are taking place: humanitarian ethics and principles; humanitarian financing; operations and programming; and evaluation, learning and policy. Please read the concept note for more details.

Contribute to our call for sessions by 4 August [deadline closed]

Over the past 17 months the humanitarian system has been affected by external forces which have brought about unplanned and unanticipated disruptions to humanitarian action.

Do you have any stories about these disruptions? Perhaps you have an idea for an interesting workshop on a specific aspect of this topic, or an insightful angle for a discussion?

We want you to help shape the discussions at this meeting through our open call for sessions.

You have a whole month to think big and pitch your suggestions, as the platform hosting our virtual meeting allows for lots of options for interaction.

We seek proposals for full sessions that fit within any of these four formats: broadcast sessions, workshops, breakout-based sessions and stories (e.g. our past 'Stories in 5'). We will accept submissions in any language and can arrange for simultaneous translation as required.

A panel of ALNAP members, secretariat staff and external reviewers will assess the proposals. If your session is chosen, we will work with you to optimise your ideas for the virtual format of the meeting.

Watch out for registration opening and early bird tickets

Our 2021 ALNAP Meeting will be held online and will be open to all humanitarians interested in the theme of the meeting. Sessions will span different time zones, so that you can take part from wherever you are.

Registration for the meeting will open in late July. Early-bird rates are available for tickets purchased before September 2021.
