The humanitarian sector has wide experience in preparing for and responding to cyclones (also known as typhoons) and tropical storms and there is a wealth of learning and knowledge for humanitarians to draw upon when they occur around the world.
However, increasingly, these recurring super storms present new or unexpected challenges due to the effects of climate change, often catching communities and responders by surprise.
This makes the quality and accessibility of learning on previous cyclones even more vital.
In ALNAP's Lesson's paper Adapting humanitarian action to the effects of climate change there is a chapter dedicated to tropical storms, fully focusing on the fact that their patterns are shifting.
In 2024, we are planning to produce a more comprehensive learning paper on cyclones.
