The article presents an overview of refugees that live in jungle areas and in urban areas in Malaysia and of their humanitarian needs. A discussion of efforts which the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has made to assist the refugees in jungle and urban locations in Malaysia is presented. Malaysia's policies on the legal status of asylum seekers, refugees and stateless people are examined. Immigration raids that are conducted on refugees in Malaysia by Malaysia's Immigration Department, the Royal Malaysian Police and a paramilitary civil volunteer organization called the Malaysian Volunteer Corps, are discussed.
